Byron Janis, the American pianist who became renowned for his commanding performances of the Romantic repertoire, passed away on Thursday at the age of 95. Janis died at Steinway Hall in New York City, where he had made his historic debut in 1948.

Janis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1924. He began playing the piano at the age of three and studied with some of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, including Claudio Arrau, Artur Schnabel, and William Kapell. Janis made his New York debut at the age of 24 and quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation.

Janis was known for his powerful technique, his sensitive touch, and his deep understanding of the Romantic repertoire.
